Small Arms

Tuesday 13 July 2004.

Arms trade is the most dangerous of the world. The proliferation and insuficient regulation of this market has reached a critical point.

Every year, are manufactured 8 millons of arms and 16.000 millons of munitions, more than two bullet for each man, woman and kid of the planet; an arm for each 10 people. Each sixty seconds, a human being die victim of arms and many other suffer abuse and serious wounds. In countries like Iraq, there is already more than one arm for habitant.

In the last four years, United States, United Kingdon and France, have won with their arm exportations to Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America, more money than what they have invest in humanitarian help for these countries.

If the development countries invested half of the funds that they spend in arms, all their kids would have primary education.

Several organizations are doing a campaign to put weapons under control. It is proposed that governments create a treaty about the arms trade, reducing their proliferation and misuse. To achieve it, Amnesty International, Iansa and Oxfam, need help from all those people interested in getting the human rights respected.
