Reducing pollution created by our domestic energy needs is the easiest step to take as individuals. Our use of energy can be much more efficient, thereby reducing the production needed. Use of efficient domestic appliances can do a lot in that direction, and the increased investment is more than paid for by reduce eletricity bills.
This attitude will force the energy companies to reduce their capacity, and, if the public will is strong enough, replace their out-of-date plants by renewable energy equipment. Reducing our domestic consumption is the easiest step to take.
Another major use of energy in our society is for transport. USA citizens in particular are famous all over the world for using their huge cars to go and buy a loaf of bread around the corner. This is not what can be called "efficient"! To be fair, there are also many organisations trying to and alleviate this problem, principally through the use of more efficient combustion engines and electric transports. Laws have been passed to encourage this, even if they have somewhat lost their substance due to opposition by the automakers.
The overwhelming majority of transports are fuelled by fossil fuels, as are most of the power plants of the world. Nuclear energy is apparently being phased out, as fewer and fewer new plants are being built. Renewable energies consist for the moment mostly of air turbines, but biogas appears to used extensively in China.
